When do you need to unlock a PDF?
PDF password protection comes in two flavors. An open password (also called a user password) blocks anyone from even viewing the file. An owner password (permissions password) lets people read the document but restricts actions like printing, copying text, or editing.
PDFey handles the open password — the one you type when a file refuses to open. If you have the right password, we strip the protection so you can freely save, print, and share the document.
Common situations where you'd want to unlock a PDF:
- You received a password-protected file and want to save an unprotected copy for your records
- A colleague shared the password but you'd rather not type it every time you open the file
- You protected your own document and now want the protection removed
- You need to merge a locked PDF with other files — most merge tools require unlocked inputs
How PDF encryption works
Under the hood, PDF encryption follows the PDF specification (ISO 32000). Modern PDFs typically use AES-256 encryption — the same standard banks and governments rely on. When you set a password, the PDF viewer encrypts the document content so it can only be decrypted with the correct key.
PDFey doesn't "crack" anything. It takes the password you provide, uses it to decrypt the document through the standard PDF API, and then saves a new copy without the encryption layer. The original content stays identical — we just remove the lock.

- For batch unlocking, process files one at a time — each may have a different password
- If you forgot the password, check with the person or service that sent you the file
- Some PDFs from government portals use your date of birth or tax ID as the password
