Rotation options

90° Clockwise

Rotate pages to the right. Use for landscape documents that should be portrait.

180° Upside Down

Flip pages completely. Use for documents that are scanned upside down.

270° Counter-clockwise

Rotate pages to the left. Use for portrait documents that should be landscape.

Common rotation scenarios

Scanned documents are the number one reason people need to rotate PDFs. Flatbed scanners sometimes feed pages sideways, and phone cameras produce landscape shots that end up wrong in the final PDF. Instead of re-scanning, just rotate the affected pages.

Other situations where rotation helps:

  • Landscape tables or charts mixed into a portrait document
  • Architectural drawings or floor plans that need to be viewed sideways
  • Presentation slides exported as PDF in the wrong orientation
  • Legal documents where signature pages were scanned upside down

How PDF rotation actually works

When you rotate a PDF page, the tool changes a property called /Rotate in the page dictionary. This is part of the PDF specification (ISO 32000). The actual content — text, images, vectors — stays exactly where it is. The viewer just reads the rotation flag and displays the page accordingly.

That's why rotation is lossless. No re-rendering, no quality loss, no file size increase. PDFey uses pdf-lib to modify this property, which means the operation takes milliseconds even for large files.

Rotation tips

  • You can rotate individual pages — not just the whole document. Click on a specific page preview to select it
  • 90° clockwise is the most common rotation. For upside-down pages, use 180°
  • If you rotate and the page looks odd, try rotating the other direction. Some scanners produce 270° rotated images
  • After rotating, you can use our Merge tool to combine the corrected pages with other documents

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I rotate only specific pages?

Currently, all pages are rotated at the same time. If you need to rotate only specific pages, you can use our Split PDF tool to extract those pages, rotate them, and then merge them back using our Merge PDF tool.

What rotation angles are available?

You can rotate pages by 90° clockwise, 180° (upside down), or 270° (90° counter-clockwise). Choose the angle that best corrects your document's orientation.

Will rotating affect the PDF quality?

No, rotating PDFs with PDFey does not affect the quality. The original content, images, text, and formatting remain exactly as they were - only the page orientation changes.

Why are my scanned documents upside down?

Scanned documents often end up with incorrect orientation depending on how the original paper was placed in the scanner. Use 180° rotation to flip upside-down pages, or 90°/270° to fix landscape/portrait issues.
